Frank Longford Charitable Trust (Longford Trust)
Anyone wanting to study for a degree who has left prison within the past 5 years, plus those who are soon to be released. Must have a conditional offer from a university. Specific emphasis on young prisoners and those whose qualifications will lead to fulfilling careers.
Grants (you don't have to pay us back) of up to £5,000 per annum for UK higher education courses, for up to 3 years to help with living expenses – but most awards are in the £1,800–£2,500 range. Most successful applicants will already have a student loan, but in some exceptional circumstances awards are given for tuition fees. Mostly undergraduate courses, but again, if there is a special case, for postgraduate courses.
All award-holders are given one-to-one mentoring by a trained mentor. With those in prison, permission must be granted for a mentor to visit. Longford Scholars are also able to access our employability project which provides specific training, work placements, internships, employment coaches and whateever else is needed to assist them in getting degree-level jobs and careers on graduating.
Anything other than higher education degrees.
Must be made on application form available on the trust’s website or obtainable from its offices. Applicants can fill it out online, or a hard copy can be printed off the website then sent by mail.
Applications must be with us by the end of the first week in June, with decisions made in July for university courses starting in September.
(See our website for exact dates)
