The Escape Route
We provide free self-employment packs for ex-prisoners. They explain how you can be your own boss.
They cover low-cost trades such as gardener, handyman or personal trainer. Coming out of prison, you probably won't have much money. So, choosing a low-cost trade means less debt, less stress, and a higher chance of success.
Each pack has a video interview with an ex-prisoner who has gone self-employed.

Alternatively, check with your prison library or training manager. Our packs are available in many prisons, from Ashfield to Werrington. Ask your training manager to get you a free pack.
Getting a job after prison is challenging, because some employers don't like to hire ex-prisoners. That's why self-employment is worth considering. Householders don't ask if you have a record.
Being your own boss isn't easy. It requires persistence and commitment. The Escape Route website discusses the pros and cons of self-employment. It also offers mentoring for ex-prisoners considering self-employment.
